Wakefield Hospice Gig
Another gig in a busy summer schedule, this one significant in that it was David’s final one as leader before he steps back from the frenzy to take a more than well-earned rest and then maybe consider returning to the fray in the future at venues where, due to his industry we have established firm links.
Today’s performance was another example of how the group has progressed under David’s guidance with confident band and individual performances. Both David Burgess and Chris sang and played with aplomb, and everyone else provided good entertainment for the dementia group and staff who formed our audience who were very responsive throughout. Stand- out numbers included Cool Water with the subtle echoes, which unfortunately I didn’t record, and Any Dream Will Do with our female singers providing the contrasting melodies. Leaning on a Lamp was also appreciated, and for a complete contrast, Bob Marley’s number was so chilled that spliffs weren’t needed to add to the atmosphere. Twice, the room came alive with dancing, with I’m into Something Good and You’re Sixteen.
Cliff’s Lucky Lips also went down a treat before David briefly departed from his proper use of the English language to refer to the Old Time Medley as being a ‘mash -up’ no doubt thinking that with his summer sabbatical being only hours away that a relaxing of standards was not too risqué.
Many thanks must go to Thelma for organising today’s event – the staff too were magnificent in their involvement and motivation of both their charges and our band. The last two gigs before the main summer break, with the band not only in full flow but also transmitting their enthusiasm to their different audiences should only have added to the pride which David has alluded to in his most recent post.
Tomorrow’s practice session will consist of half a dozen songs followed by a convivial hour of meaningful conversation during which David will be available to sign plain t- shirts and autograph books. Don’t miss it!!
Yes, a most enjoyable outing for final, end-of-season business. Seemingly widely appreciated.
Thanks to everyone participating (especially our soloists) and of course to Thelma for taking on the responsibilities of organizing /video-ing etc.
Great to witness the audience having such a good time as well. What with this occasion and “white-shirt wash man” perhaps we should change our name to Wakeylele DANCE band?
Thanks Phil for the report – as always, a great read (and chuckle).
Now if only we had a leader who follows a playlist…….
